It’s a good question since all too often, middle-aged guys trying to dress “cool” look plain silly.  Here are a few tips for dressing young without looking foolish:

1. Wear clothes that fit.  These days, slim (not tight) is in, so anything that’s been hanging in the closet a few years is likely too baggy and poorly proportioned.  Try a more current fit in shirts and jackets, those that have a higher arm hole as well as a trimmer arm and body.  Most have transitioned into flat front trousers, but those that haven’t, it is a necessity.  Even bigger guys look thinner in fitted clothing.

2. Choose grown up clothes. Did you really read that?  Yes.  Unless you are Bono or Springsteen and rockin it on stage, ripped jeans and a T shirt are signs that you are trying too hard.  Buy some premium denim and pair it back with a soft coat or even a plaid jacket to get the modern and contemporary look.

3. Spruce up the accessories.  All style is accented by personal statements, meaning update your belt or briefcase, splurge on some handmade shoes.  These accessories will modernize your image and make the whole outfit look expensive.

4. Grooming.   Quit trying to slide those follicles over the top of your head.  Pay a little extra, go see a stylist about a haircut.

5. Don’t take this stuff too seriously.  Fashion is supposed to be fun.  What you do during your job, family is all serious.  Have some fun with your fashion and add some playful elements with your wardrobe.  Add a great pair of bold, colorful socks with your business attire.  Try a cool pair of cufflinks or pocket square to a jacket.  Remember when you buy quality, you can’t screw it up too badly.

Some people are going to stay inside, pull the blinds closed and take the day off. Not me… These are the days around this area that you must breathe the air, see the clouds. These days are special; flowers are in full bloom full of cool mornings and buckets of sunshine.

I went and hit some practice balls yesterday at the driving range. Whoa, people were everywhere! The Easter Bunny would have been proud because there must have been 10,000 white Easter eggs spread out over the range.

What will your lifestyle be this weekend – and more importantly – are you going to look as good as this beautiful spring day?

Linen pants with a Navy Blazer seems like an appropriate pairing today. They’re good for the meetings this morning, yet cool for the forecast today. Then I can transition them easily to dinner tonight with the family.

Saturday brings the fun clothing options for most of us to go with the fun we’ll have on our day off: tee times, youth baseball, a crawfish boil, and maybe even a boat ride on the water. For a fun day, fun, comfortable wear includes tech shirts from Peter Millar and vintage twill shorts from Scott Barber. I’ll be sneaking in some cool Puma golf shoes, and I’ll put my Thomas Dean bathing suit in the car just in case. Actually, while I’m at it, I’ll probably put my new Element 4 Wind Vest from Peter Millar in the trunk as well as I see that we have some low 60’s for the morning and evening forecast. After a day of fun and a quick shave and shower, I’ll be off to a cool party with my wife and friends – can someone say cocktail?!? I’ll definitely be wearing jeans, probably a darker wash J Brand as darker is better than lighter for parties. I’ll pair the jeans with a new cotton jacket.

One thing that guys must understand is that shoes say so much about you. In the spring, go with suede. They’re stylish, fun and definitely set you apart from the guy in the corner with his starched khakis and black cap toes. The new To Boot Suede loafer probably will fit the foot for the party.

Sunday… Hmmm, what to do? I think I will just repeat Saturday; that sounds good to me. I’ll go out again and enjoy the last day of the weekend.

According to the Stress and Phobia Center in Asheville, NC, 17-21 million people are affected by the fear of Friday the 13th, so that means more room in the parking lot for you to zip by The Rogue and pick up any pieces you need for this weekend.
